South Korea Enacts Law to Facilitate AI: Use of Limited Personal Data After Regulatory Review
The South Korean National Assembly passed an amendment to the Personal Information Protection Act, allowing AI developers to use personal data within a limited scope after review by the Personal Information Protection Committee, breaking the previous rigid requirement that data be used for AI development only with individual consent. This move addresses long-standing industry complaints, as exemptions were previously limited to a few scenarios such as voice fraud prevention and autonomous driving, with short durations. The new regulations expand the available data space for AI development.
